NASA has posted a recent satellite photo of Beijing and Tianjin at night. The photo actually shows a large swathe of the area that Greater Beijing would encompass. NASA’s population number for Beijing is wrong; Beijing already has nearly 20 million residents.
I wonder how many more lights there will be in a similar photo taken in 2020?
UPDATE: NASA has the picture reversed. I flipped it so that Beijing is in the upper left corner of the photo. END UPDATE

Had no idea that Tianjin’s footprint was so significant, in relation to Beijing. Possibly has a bit to do with the angle of the image… but still surprising.
