April 2010 Issue of Proceedings Magazine on the Chinese Navy

"Sinocism is the Presidential Daily Brief for China hands"- Evan Osnos, New Yorker Correspondent and National Book Award Winner

The April 2010 issue if the US Naval Institute‘s Proceedings Magazine focuses on the PLAN, China’s Navy. Some stories are free, most require a subscription.

I highly recommend the following free stories:

Nan Li’s “Scanning the Horizon for ‘New Historical Missions‘”- The Chinese Navy is the special beneficiary of its government’s embrace of ‘externalization.’

Craig Hooper and Christopher Albon’s “Get Off the Fainting Couch“- Have fretful descriptions of China’s medium-range antiship ballistic missile endangered America’s strategic standing in the Pacific Basin? Its time to stop worrying and start managing the Chinese ASBM threat.

Meanwhile, People’s Daily wrote on April 1 that the “Chinese navy build-up [is] no threat to ASEAN countries”.

UPDATE1: Defense Tech also has a good discussion of “China’s Carrier Killing Missile“.

UPDATE2: Ben Simpfendorfer has an interesting post on the Foreign Policy site about the Chinese Navy’s growing presence in the Persian Gulf–“China’s historic return to the gulf“.
