The Sinocism China Newsletter For 11.28.12

"Sinocism is the Presidential Daily Brief for China hands"- Evan Osnos, New Yorker Correspondent and National Book Award Winner

I am interrupting this newsletter once again to ask for your support. Sinocism is a labor of love and it is gratifying to have nearly 6,000 readers every day, but like all of you I too have to make a living. I have resisted putting the newsletter completely behind a paywall as there are a lot of .edu readers and I wish I’d had this resource when I was a student.

Please consider contributing, especially since today is my birthday. Unless we reach my target I am planning to move away from a daily newsletter by the end of December. If you do sign up to pay but I miss the target do not worry, you will get your money back.

For as little as 20 cents USD a day you can stay very informed about China. Sounds like a bargain to me.

I can provide invoices and receipts, and if Paypal is problematic we can figure something else out.

Thanks, I hope we can keep this going.

人民日报-引导国际关系新发展(高举和平、发展、合作、共赢的旗帜) 钟 声 –

Military innovation improves China’s self-confidence – People’s Daily Online– Anyone with a little military common sense knows that it is sheer nonsense that J-15 is the “replica” of some foreign airplane. J-15 is the first multi-purpose carrier-based fighter developed by China which can carry out air and sea combat missions. It has completely independent intellectual property rights and is a truly Chinese fighter. It is also the results of innovation and intellectual research of China’s defense scientists and engineers. The so-called “plagiarism” is untenable and a reflection of some people’s “sour grapes” mentality. Those with ulterior motives must not underestimate China’s capability of independent innovation on national defense science and technology.

China Unveils New Killer Drones, Aims Them At Russia | Danger Room | Wired.com – If you’re the leader of a small or mid-sized Latin American, African or Asian country, a relatively cheap Chinese drone (that packs a punch) might not be a bad deal — think bargain shopping for flying death robots — compared to the more pricey American or Israeli drones, which happen to lead the world market. That means even if China’s drones won’t match the U.S. anytime soon, it may still spread them far and wide.

Oppa Aircraft Carrier Style! Assessing China’s First Carrier Takeoff and Landing – China Real Time Report – WSJ – On the other hand, always choosing “baby steps” over “pushing the envelope” will severely restrict the progress that Beijing can make. Chinese planners thus face important decisions in this regard. How they decide will be reflected in part in how aggressively Liaoning pursues operations at night, in all weather conditions, and in rough seas. Perhaps if public excitement eventually dies down, it will become easier to use the carrier.

A New Tower of Babel | ChinaFile Beta – Indeed, if this plot summary sounds slim, consider this: From Point-to-Point is “written” without a single word—at least as they are traditionally defined. Instead, it is composed with hundreds of icons, or pictograms, that Xu has been collecting for years. Where Book from the Sky can be read by no one, Book from the Ground can be read by any one. It is, in other words, a remarkable effort to create a universal form of written communication that transcends cultural, linguistic, class, and educational backgrounds. In Xu’s words, “The illiterate can enjoy the delight of reading just as the intellectual does.”

The Troubling Inner Workings of One “U.S. College Application Consulting Company” in China | Tea Leaf Nation – From my experience with the process, however, what the Chinese overseas study consulting companies are trying to offer is not just essay editing but something dangerously close to plagiarism. Because the concept of intellectual property is still relatively weak in China, however, many people do not regard rewriting essays as problematic; they view it as an easy, efficient alternative to the “gruelling” process of editing.

  1. I have been a keen reader of your newsletter for some time now. It has been an invaluable resource for me as a student of Chinese and Chinese society.

As a rule I love the free internet, with all the resources it provides without straining my budget. Before today I have never payed for any web based service.

However, faced with the possibility of an unfortunate end to your daily newsletter, I have started contributing via paypal and suggested to my friends that they do the same. I hope that others will start donating too, so that you will be able to make ends meet.

There you have it, my egotistical reason for contributing to this unparalleled resource.

Thank you very much for the amazing work you’re performing, making it easy to follow Chinese news.

    Best regards,

    Puck Engman

  2. Bill, I don’t consider myself prepared for the day of China-centric work until I’ve scrutinized Sinocism. It is an absolute essential part of staying current with important developments in China; the service you provide is extremely valuable. My contribution is forthcoming and I hope it is part of keeping Sinocism coming daily – Greg Gilligan
