China’s Bullish November Economic Data – Business Insider – China’s government will be setting its official economic targets fro 2013.  Here’s SocGen’s Yao: “Policymakers will meet at the Central Economic Work Conference (CEWC) in the next few days and set the economic targets for 2013. At the Politburo meeting last week – the prep meeting for the CEWC, the top leaders sounded more confidence in the growth momentum, reiterated to maintain prudent monetary policy, and emphasised the importance of the quality of growth as well as structural reforms. Hence, we expect no change in either the growth target of 7.5% or the cautiously supportive policy stance.

China November inflation bounces off 33-month lows | Reuters – dimming the chance for more monetary policy easing as its economy recovers.Sunday’s data missed analysts’ expectations for November inflation to quicken to five-month highs of 2.1 percent from October’s 1.7 percent. China is now heading toward Japan-style economic paralysis if it doesnt change course- Quartz- by Jack Rodman..see from graf 3 on for Rodman’s record on his pronouncements about Beijing real estate. more and more people saying China on the road to being like Japan. I still think the differences between the two are much greater than than the similarities. but it certainly makes a catchy headline and a good soundbite// Property prices in Japan and China, driven by speculation (supported by the banks), were pushed to unaffordable levels, limiting and in some cases prohibiting, middle-class homeownership in each country. Government policies favoring the construction industry created the problem as both countries tried to “grow their way out of the problem” by “paving over the countryside” with infrastructure developments. I leave it to the political pundits to compare the 50-year rule of the Liberal Democratic Party in Japan to the 60-year reign of the Chinese Communist Party in China. But the strong similarities are undeniable.

Sea Bass With Barbie Dolls Challenge Wal-Mart in China – Bloomberg – RT-Mart// From Shanghai to Chengdu, the outlets run by China’s largest big-box retailer, Sun Art Retail Group Ltd. (6808), are recreating American-style Wal-Marts, with one big difference: They’re giving them the feel of local street markets with hairy crabs laid on table tops and discounted hot-pot ingredients. That formula has helped it crack the country’s 507 billion yuan ($81 billion) hypermarket industry overseas rivals Tesco Plc. (TSCO), Wal-Mart and Carrefour SA (CA) have struggled to get a handle on.

As Tibetan self-immolations rise, Beijing tightens grip | Reuters– Some experts have said Communist Party chief Xi Jinping — whose former vice premier father had a close bond with exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama — might adopt a more reformist approach to the troubled mountainous region when he takes over as president in March. But so far, the anti-China protests, including 81 burning cases this year, have only been met with an intensified crackdown by Chinese security forces.

Rare Beijing protest takes aim at high-speed rail project | South China Morning Post– Police allowed the largely middle-class protesters to march down a main road, where they briefly blocked an intersection shouting “down with the high-speed line” and “change the route”. They peacefully dispersed later in the afternoon.

No surprise some are cynical about anti-graft efforts | South China Morning Post– However, Xi’s trip to Guangdong was not just about charming the people. The selection of Shenzhen as his first stop aimed to send a strong message that he would continue Deng Xiaoping’s open-door policy. By contrast, when Hu came to power in 2002, his first trip beyond Beijing saw him pay homage to Xibaipo, a village in Hebei where Communist leaders established their base from 1947 to 1948. While some mainlanders are heartened by Xi’s efforts to fashion a new style and his promises to fight corruption, many can be forgiven for being sceptical.

Analysis: As China’s clout grows, sea policy proves unfathomable | Reuters– “It is really unclear, I think, to most nations (what the regulations mean),” U.S. Ambassador to Beijing Gary Locke told Reuters last week. “Until we really understand what these things are, there is no way to comment. First we need clarification of the extent, the purpose and the reach of these regulations.” The fact that a provincial government can unilaterally worsen one of China’s most sensitive diplomatic problems highlights the dysfunctionality, and potential danger, of policymaking in this arena, analysts say.
